Vietnam's Dak Lak records first dengue death of 2026

Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands has recorded its first death from dengue of the year, according to the province's Department of Health

The patient, identified as T.V.S., 77, a resident of Tan An Ward, had a history of type 2 diabetes.

On July 30, his family took him to Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital after he developed symptoms including slurred speech and generalized weakness.

He was diagnosed with respiratory failure, aspiration pneumonia, ischemic stroke, dengue fever at stage N1, and type 2 diabetes.

He was later transferred to the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital for further treatment.

The patient died at 4:50 am on August 3.

His diagnoses at the time of death included cardiopulmonary arrest, severe pneumonia, ischemic stroke, elevated liver enzymes, hypokalemia, dengue fever at stage N5, type 2 diabetes, and age-related frailty.

Real-time RT-PCR testing conducted by the Central Highlands Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology confirmed that the patient had tested positive for dengue virus type 2.

An epidemiological investigation by the Dak Lak Center for Disease Control (CDC Dak Lak) found that, as of August 6, Tan An Ward had recorded 49 dengue cases and six outbreaks.

Another person in the patient's neighborhood and surrounding households was found to have a fever and was suspected of having dengue.

Vector surveillance in the area recorded a Breteau Index (BI) of 77, indicating a notable risk of community transmission.

Amid the complicated dengue situation, Tan An Ward's health station implemented containment measures and handled two newly identified outbreaks in Buon Du and Residential Group 12.

It also conducted chemical spraying to kill adult mosquitoes at the patient's home and nearby households.

According to CDC Dak Lak, the province had recorded more than 3,100 dengue cases and one death as of August 10.
