The resolution was passed on Friday, the final working day of the first session of the 16th legislature, with 478 out of 487 deputies present voting in favor.

Under the resolution, Dong Nai City will be formed on the basis of the entire natural area and population of the current Dong Nai Province.

The new city will share borders with Ho Chi Minh City, Lam Dong Province, Tay Ninh Province, and Cambodia.

As per the resolution, the government, the provincial People’s Council, and the People’s Committee – transitioning into the city’s governing bodies upon the resolution’s effective date – are in charge of implementing the changes.

Administrative units, organizations, and institutions currently bearing the name ‘Dong Nai Province’ will be renamed to reflect the new designation as Dong Nai City once the resolution comes into force.

Existing legal documents and official papers issued prior to the effective date will remain valid until their expiration or until they are amended, replaced, or revoked by competent authorities, in accordance with the law.

In addition to the policies applied to centrally-governed cities, Dong Nai will continue to benefit from existing special mechanisms and policies previously granted to the province.

These will remain in effect until the end of their designated period or until new decisions are issued by relevant authorities.

According to the government’s earlier proposal, the new Dong Nai City will encompass a natural area of 12,737.18 square kilometers, a population of 4.49 million, and 95 commune-level administrative units.

The city’s administrative headquarters will remain at its current location.

Organizational structures within the political system, including officials and civil servants, will also be maintained to ensure continuity.
