A group of young Vietnamese have won an international manga award thanks to their historical comic and will take it sometime between this and next month.
The first episode of the ‘Long Than Tuong’ (Marshal Long) series, a fictionalized historical comic by the Phong Duong Comics group, will be honored with the silver prize at the 9th International Manga Award, to be given in Japan.
As planned, Nguyen Thanh Phong, a group member, will be in the East Asian country from February 23 to March 3 to receive the award.
The painter expressed his happiness seeing the group’s work known beyond Vietnam and recognized by pundits who have expertise in comics and publishing.
“I hope this would be a good start for ‘Long Than Tuong’ in particular and all other comic authors,” Phong said.
‘Long Than Tuong,’ which was released in November 2014 thanks to crowdfunding, has so far had its three parts finished and been expected to be presented at a book festival in Ho Chi Minh City next month.
The International Manga Award was founded by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007 to expand international exchange and mutual understanding through the manga culture, which is widely accepted around the world.
This award honors those artists contributing to the development of manga in the world.
