Located in Thuan An Ward of Long My Town, the Hau Giang biomass power plant has a designed capacity of 20MW and carries a price tag of VND875 billion (US$34 million).
The plant will consume about 117,000 metric tons of rice husks annually.
It aims to contribute to a cleaner energy supply while promoting circular economy and sustainable development by utilizing agricultural waste as fuel.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dong Van Thanh, secretary of the provincial Party Committee, emphasized the project's significance in boosting local economic development, creating jobs, and increasing the province’s budget revenue.
Thanh also highlighted that by using rice husks, the plant would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance the circular economy.
He encouraged the investor to operate the plant efficiently and to continue exploring opportunities to develop additional biomass energy projects in this Mekong Delta province.
Biomass energy is renewable energy derived from organic materials, such as plants, agricultural and forestry residues, and organic waste.
It can be used for heating, electricity generation, and as transportation fuels, according to the
International Renewable Energy Agency.
