Vietnam’s Hai Phong to add QR codes providing information about local streets, public works

Authorities in Hai Phong City, northern Vietnam are planning to install QR codes along streets and public works so that tourists can access useful information about the city in different languages.

The Hai Phong People's Committee has issued a plan to install QR codes on local street name signs and public works, an official from the municipal Department of Culture and Sports told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday.

The goal of this is to help residents and tourists learn about the history of the streets, local traditions, biographies of famous people, landscapes, and historical relics associated with the construction and development of Vietnam, and Hai Phong City in particular.

During the first phase, the QR codes will be added to 450 streets and public works in 14 out of 15 districts in the city.

In this stage, expected to be carried out this year, competent authorities will first compile information on biographies of historical figures and the origins and meaning of local street names.

The information will be then digitized and turned into QR codes.

The QR codes will be installed on street name signs and public works within November.

The first stage is expected to cost VND650 million (US$26,160), funded by the city budget.

During the second stage from 2023 to 2025, the information will be updated and new QR codes will be added to the remaining streets and public works across Hai Phong.

The information will be translated into English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and there will also be QR codes that provide information and photos about popular cultural sites and tourist spots.
