In her letter of commendation sent on Friday, Lan congratulated the joint medical team for completing their ninth fetal cardiac procedure, and the first on a foreign patient.

The fetus, weighing under 600 grams, was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect and referred to Vietnam by medical experts in Singapore.

The minister highlighted the complexity of fetal cardiac intervention, noting that the technique is only practiced successfully in a handful of countries with highly advanced medical systems.

Calling the achievement a symbol of Vietnam’s strengthening domestic medical capabilities, Lan emphasized that the procedure required not only technical precision but also ethical courage and multi-specialty coordination to make life-or-death decisions for both mother and child.

“This success is not only a medical breakthrough but also a deeply humane accomplishment.

“Fragile lives on the edge of survival have been preserved through the dedication and intellect of doctors,” she wrote.

The letter also praised the team for their resilience.

The case was particularly challenging because the initial intervention attempt failed, requiring a second, high-stakes intervention.

The emotional moment of success saw the 20-member team, along with the patient’s family, in tears of relief and pride.

The health minister added that the successful procedure will pave the way for early diagnosis and treatment of complex fetal conditions and help elevate Vietnam’s position on the global medical stage.

She called on the health sector to continue advancing in specialized techniques, upholding professional ethics, and reinforcing international trust in Vietnamese healthcare.

This marked Vietnam’s ninth successful fetal cardiac intervention, all carried out by healthcare specialists at Tu Du Hospital and Children’s Hospital 1.

The latest case has captured public admiration and added momentum to Vietnam’s medical innovation and international integration.
