Water from upstream continued flowing into Hoi An, which became part of Da Nang City after an administrative merger in July, but levels have begun to recede, the national weather agency said in a 3:30 am update.

More than 5,800 local households have been under 0.5-2 meters of water following recent torrential rains.

Flooding is expected to subside slowly over the next 12 hours but remain high.

Tourist activities in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have been suspended.

Authorities have blocked several riverside streets and deployed rescue teams to ensure safety.

In other parts of Da Nang, 28 communes and wards were flooded.

Residents described the flooding as the worst in decades.
