Vietnam’s Hon Phu Tu landmark still awaits restoration nearly 20 years after collapse

Hon Phu Tu, known for its natural beauty and cultural significance, is located in Kien Luong Commune, An Giang Province.

The site has seen improvements in surrounding areas such as Hang Pagoda, Bai Duong Beach, and Kim Cuong Cave.

Clean beaches, lush greenery, and bustling seafood stalls now welcome visitors, but many tourists still expressed regret that Hon Phu (Father) has not been restored.

Only Hon Tu (Child) stands alone against the sea winds.

Nguyen Thanh Binh, a visitor from Can Tho City, southern Vietnam, said the area has become cleaner and more attractive over time but he lamented the absence of the original twin rock formation.

“If local authorities could restore Hon Phu Tu, it would be beautiful again,” he said.

Tran Binh Trong, chairman of the Kien Luong Commune administration, described Hon Phu Tu as the 'soul' of local tourism.

He said that visitors to Mo So often combine their trips with sightseeing at Hang Pagoda, Bai Duong Beach, and Hon Phu Tu.

Authorities have previously considered options such as salvaging the fallen rock from the sea or creating an artificial replacement.

The commune plans to petition higher authorities to revisit restoration proposals to boost tourism and local socio-economic development.

Hon Phu, the larger rock standing more than 33 meters tall, collapsed into the sea on August 9, 2006 after heavy rain and strong waves.

The incident shocked visitors and left Hon Tu isolated.
