Vietnam’s industry ministry inks deal with Samsung for smart factory development

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung Vietnam Complex on a cooperation project for smart factory development in the Southeast Asian country.

Under the MoU, which was signed in Hanoi on Tuesday, this project will support 50 Vietnamese enterprises to apply the smart factory model and train 100 Vietnamese consultants in this field, according to Samsung Vietnam.

The cooperation project, which will be implemented from now to 2023, is of great significance and to help raise the level of Vietnam’s industry, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said at the signing ceremony.

The project will enhance the professional capacity of domestic consultants, improve local enterprises’ business-operating capability based on information technology application, and especially better their readiness to apply new technologies in corporate activities, according to the ministry.

Participants in the project will be trained for 12 weeks, including three weeks of theoretic issues and nine weeks of practice, to improve their knowledge and skills to set up smart factories, the ministry said.

As the application of digital transformation in supporting industries and manufacturing industries in Vietnam is still limited, the readiness of Vietnamese businesses to apply advanced technologies to production and business activities is not as high as expected, Minister Dien commented.

Most enterprises are also facing difficulties resulting from the lack of digital skills and human resources, digital thinking, and a strong information technology platform to enable digital transformation, among others.

The project on smart factory development is useful to help address these issues, he stated.

Choi Joo Ho, general director of Samsung Vietnam Complex, said that Samsung experts will provide direct training in smart factories to trainees at Vietnamese enterprises that take part in the project.

He expressed his hope that the Vietnamese government will make policies to help local businesses improve their competitiveness and have opportunities to spur the development of supporting industries in Vietnam.

Since 2012, the ministry has entered into many projects with Samsung Vietnam, including training 207 consultants and giving consultancy on improvement to 144 businesses, Minister Dien said.

In 2015, the ministry cooperated with Samsung to launch a consultancy program to improve competitiveness for 379 Vietnamese enterprises.

During the 2018-21 period, the two sides trained 406 experts in supporting industries in Vietnam, according to the ministry.

“Cooperation activities between the ministry and Samsung Vietnam have significantly contributed to improving the quality of human resources and the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises, thereby gradually increasing the number of Vietnamese enterprises participating in Samsung’s supply chain as well as the global value chain,” Minister Dien concluded.

Samsung currently has eight facilities in Vietnam, including six manufacturing plants, one R&D center, and one sales entity, the Samsung executive said.

In addition to manufacturing mobile phones and home appliances, Samsung Vietnam Complex also produces key components for televisions and telephones.
