Vietnam’s mobile internet speed breaks into global top 10, ahead of US, China

The Speedtest Global Index for July 2026, released by U.S.-based internet testing firm Ookla, showed a sharp improvement in Vietnam’s internet speed rankings.

Vietnam climbed 10 places to rank 10th globally for mobile internet, with a median download speed of 205.58Mbps.

That was nearly twice the global median of 109.73Mbps and put Vietnam ahead of major technology powers including the U.S., which ranked 12th with 189.21Mbps, and China, which ranked 13th with 179.80Mbps.

Vietnam still trails the global leaders in mobile internet speed.

Middle Eastern countries with advanced 5G infrastructure dominate the top of the ranking, led by the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, where median download speeds range from 500Mbps to 640Mbps — roughly 2.5 to three times Vietnam’s figure.

Vietnam also remained among the world's leading countries for fixed broadband, ranking seventh globally with a median download speed of around 255.87Mbps.

The country's fixed broadband speed was well above the global median of around 200.12Mbps and surpassed speeds of several developed economies.

The U.S. ranked ninth, with a median download speed of 391.53Mbps, while Japan ranked 10th.

Singapore topped the fixed broadband ranking with a median download speed of more than 641Mbps, followed by France at 528.07Mbps and Chile at 488.77Mbps.

Vietnam's strong performance in both rankings reflects the expansion of 5G and the wider availability of gigabit fiber-optic broadband by domestic telecom operators.

The faster networks are expected to provide a stronger foundation for the country's digital transformation and digital economy.
