Vietnam's smartphone, component exports surge to $6.8bn in July

In the first seven months of 2026, Vietnam exported $38.49 billion worth of phones and components, up nearly 19 percent from a year earlier, making the product group one of the country's key electronics export earners.

Samsung's launch of its new Galaxy Z line-up last month also helped boost Vietnam's smartphone exports.

The South Korean tech giant, which entered the Vietnamese electronics market in 1995, said in 2023 that more than half of the smartphones it sold worldwide were made in Vietnam, evidence of the Southeast Asian country's growing role in its global manufacturing network.

VinaCapital, one of Vietnam's leading investment management firms, said the global artificial intelligence boom continued to provide strong momentum for the country's electronics exports, including smartphones and components.

China remains largest market

China remained Vietnam's largest export market for phones and components, with shipments totaling around $8.2 billion in the first seven months, up more than 24 percent year on year.

The U.S. ranked second, with Vietnamese shipments worth $7.12 billion, up 10.07 percent from a year earlier.

In July alone, exports to the U.S. reached $1.5 billion, rising 43.5 percent from June and 35.4 percent from the same month last year.

South Korea also recorded particularly strong growth, with Vietnam's phone and component exports to the market reaching $3.99 billion in the first seven months, up 69.28 percent year on year.

The growth raised South Korea's share of Vietnam's total phone and component exports from 7.25 percent to 10.35 percent.

Japan was another major buyer, with exports to the market reaching $1.65 billion, up 58.95 percent year on year, raising its share from 3.2 percent to 4.29 percent.

Vietnam deepens role in global supply chain

The surge in smartphone and component exports has coincided with Vietnam taking on a larger role in the global supply chain for mobile and smart devices.

Vietnam is not only Samsung's largest smartphone manufacturing hub but it is also home to 35 Apple suppliers, making it the world's fourth-largest location for Apple suppliers after mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Google is also reportedly expanding its manufacturing activities in Vietnam.

Nikkei Asia reported that Google plans to shift its production of Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds out of China, with Vietnam and India emerging as destinations for the relocated production.

These developments underscore Vietnam's growing importance in the global supply chain for smart devices.
