Vietnam faced the Northern Mariana Islands in their second Group D match at Ba Ria Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.

Kyrgyzstan’s 18-0 victory over the Northern Mariana Islands in their opening match had put considerable pressure on Vietnam ahead of the game.

Kyrgyzstan then beat Palestine 2-1 in their second match, taking their goal difference to 20-1.

Vietnam, meanwhile, had beaten Palestine 6-0 in their opening match, so they needed to defeat the Northern Mariana Islands by a large margin to compete for the top spot in the group, which would determine the only team to qualify for the final tournament.

Despite the pressure, Vietnam made a strong start. Just one minute and 12 seconds into the match, Khanh Chi opened the scoring with a finish after a through ball from Quynh Lam.

Three minutes later, Quynh Lam scored to make it 2-0.

Vietnam added seven more goals in the first half. Khanh Chi scored twice more, in the 12th and 18th minutes, to complete her hat-trick.

Yen Linh also scored a brace, while Ngoc Anh, Quynh Lam, and Ha Vi added one goal each.

Right at the start of the second half, Khanh Chi netted again to put Vietnam 10-0 ahead.

Ngoc Anh and Yen Nhi then added goals to extend the lead to 12-0 by the 59th minute.

However, the match was temporarily suspended in the 65th minute because lightning made conditions unsafe for the players.

After a delay of around 15 minutes, play resumed, and the hosts continued their scoring spree.

In less than two minutes, Khanh Chi scored in the 70th minute and Ha Vi found the net in the 72nd, extending Vietnam’s lead to 14-0.

The two quick goals effectively ended the Northern Mariana Islands players’ remaining hopes of putting up a fight.

They conceded six more goals in the minutes that followed, with Khanh Chi scoring her sixth goal of the match in the 75th minute.

The emphatic 20-0 victory put Vietnam top of Group D with six points from two matches.

Although level on points with Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam had a superior goal difference of 26-0, compared with Kyrgyzstan’s 20-1.

The two teams will meet in their final group-stage match on October 11 to decide which side claim the group’s only place in the final tournament.

The 20-0 victory surpassed Vietnam’s previous record for the biggest win in women’s football, a 16-0 victory over the Maldives in 2016, news site VnExpress reported.
