Vietnam’s Viet Duc hospital to open new facility built at over $190K per bed next week

The new 1,000-bed site received more than VND5 trillion (US$190 million) in first-phase funding, with over VND5 billion ($190,000) per bed, making it one of the country’s most expensive hospital projects.

Additional medical equipment worth more than VND1 trillion ($38 million) will be installed in the second phase.

Hospital director Duong Duc Hung said the Ninh Binh campus will begin initial operations on December 19 and is expected to take patients directly in the first quarter of 2026 after final checks on operating theaters and sterilization systems.

The hospital will start with 300 beds, or about 30 percent of its design capacity, to ensure staffing and resources are aligned with demand, Hung said.

About 450 medical staff members will be assigned to the new facility.

The health ministry is seeking special administrative arrangements for Viet Duc and Bach Mai hospitals, which run campuses in more than one locality, including unified pricing for medical services that currently require local approval.

Patients from Ninh Binh and neighboring northern provinces account for 30 percent to 35 percent of the caseload at Viet Duc’s crowded Hanoi facility, a proportion that mirrors the number of patients still sharing beds there.

Officials said the new campus is expected to eliminate bed-sharing once fully operational.
