Low-cost Vietnamese carrier Vietjet and German aircraft lessor GOAL on Thursday signed a strategic agreement on the financing of four brand new A321 aircraft worth US$464 million the airline plans to purchase from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
The contract signing was witnessed by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who is on an official visit to Germany from July 5 to 8.
GOAL, fully known as the GOAL German Operating Aircraft Leasing GmbH & Co KG, is a joint venture between KGAL GmbH & Co. KG and Deutsche Lufthansa AG.
The acquisition of the four aircraft is part of a purchase agreement for A320 aircraft signed earlier this year between Vietjet and Airbus, the Vietnamese carrier said in a press release on Friday.
Vietjet will receive the four aircraft by the end of 2017 in order to meet expansion plans for the airline’s domestic and international flight network.
Vietjet President and CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao revealed after the signing ceremony that her airline has so far received 16 new A321 aircraft, worth nearly $2 billion, from Hamburg, Germany.
Last month Vietjet signed a similar deal with Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance Company Limited, a member of Japan’s leading finance group Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, to finance its acquisition of three brand new A321 aircraft, worth $348 million.
In May in the U.S., the budget carrier signed a series of deals securing $4.7 billion in maintenance support for aircraft engines, components, and technical services.
