Vietnam’s Vung Tau plans public park on prime 13,000m² land plot

Authorities in Vung Tau Ward, Ho Chi Minh City plan to convert a prime 13,000-square-meter site into a public park, with an investment of about VND20 billion (US$760,000) and construction expected to begin in the third quarter.

The ward administration held a public consultation on Wednesday to collect residents’ opinions on a detailed 1:500-scale master plan for a themed park at 21 Thong Nhat Street.

The site is considered highly valuable as it is located in the center of Vung Tau Ward and surrounded by multiple schools, with four street frontages along major roads including Thong Nhat, Le Lai, Pham Ngu Lao, and Ly Thuong Kiet.

Currently, the land plot does not contain permanent buildings. It consists mainly of green space with many mature trees that have grown naturally over time.

However, due to the lack of structured planning and routine maintenance, officials said the area has not been used efficiently.

Under the proposed design, the park will feature a central building intended for exhibitions and service-related activities, with its centerpiece being an octopus-shaped symbol representing adaptability, intelligence, and survival.

In addition to the central structure, the park will include several themed zones designed to encourage public interaction and community engagement.

These areas include cultural and historical spaces featuring dinosaur models inspired by the Jurassic period, as well as zones dedicated to science, arts, film, and comics.

One of the key elements of the design is the preservation of all existing mature trees.

Planners aim to incorporate these trees into the park layout while establishing an open-park model that allows access from multiple directions.

The concept is intended to improve connectivity and convenience for both residents and tourists.

During the public consultation meeting, most residents expressed support for converting the prime land into a public park.

However, several participants suggested adjustments to better suit the surrounding environment, particularly because the area is located near many schools.

Residents proposed adding more features designed for children and students and expanding parking facilities around the park to accommodate increased visitor traffic.

Some attendees also recommended reconsidering the octopus-shaped symbol as the central architectural theme, suggesting that an alternative symbol might better reflect the local identity.

According to the ward administration, the project aligns with Ho Chi Minh City’s broader policy to expand public amenities and improve the quality of urban living.

After gathering public feedback, the ward will proceed with the necessary administrative steps to implement the project in accordance with regulations.
