VNPT, Qualcomm launch Vietnam’s 1st center of excellence for core technology research

Positioned as a regional innovation and research hub, VQEC aims to foster collaboration among firms, research institutes, universities, and tech start-ups.

The center will focus on developing smart electronic devices, network equipment, and artificial intelligence (AI) computing technologies, contributing to Vietnam’s ambition of mastering core technologies.

This initiative is part of VNPT’s broader strategic vision extending to 2030, with a roadmap toward 2035.

The strategy emphasizes three main pillars:

- Modern, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure, including 5G/6G networks, cloud computing, data centers, and next-generation connectivity platforms.

- A ‘Made in Vietnam’ digital ecosystem, comprising digital products and services that support e-government, digital economy, and digital society.

- Core technologies developed by Vietnamese talent, ranging from AI and IoT to edge computing and semiconductors.

Speaking at the launch, VNPT CEO Huynh Quang Liem highlighted the strategic importance of VQEC, describing it as a new space for innovation that will drive the development of 5G/6G infrastructure, cloud services, and data centers.

He emphasized that the center would generate technological solutions to strengthen Vietnam’s digital ecosystem.

The center is also envisioned as a national innovation hub, fostering synergies among businesses, academic institutions, research organizations, and start-ups, he said.

It will serve as a point of convergence for Vietnamese intelligence and global expertise, where engineers from VNPT and Qualcomm will co-develop next-generation devices and solutions, boosting Vietnam’s capacity to produce internationally competitive, domestically-made technologies.

In August, VNPT and Qualcomm signed a strategic cooperation agreement to establish the center.

VQEC is the first facility in Vietnam with direct access to global core technology development, expected to play a key role in elevating Vietnam's position in the international digital technology value chain.
