Earnings per share (EPS) are calculated by dividing a company’s after-tax profit by the average number of ordinary shares outstanding.

The indicator is commonly used by investors to compare profitability among companies in the same industry, although it should be considered alongside other measures such as share prices and the price-to-earnings, or P/E, ratio.

BVBank records fastest EPS growth

BVBank, listed under the ticker BVB, posted the strongest EPS growth among banks that had released their reviewed first-half financial statements as of August 17.

Its EPS reached VND682 (US$0.026) per share in the first six months of 2026, five times the VND135 ($0.005) recorded in the same period last year.

The increase was driven by after-tax profit attributable to ordinary shareholders, which surged to VND437.2 billion ($16.7 million), 5.9 times the year-earlier level.

VPBank ranked second in terms of EPS growth, with its figure rising 68.5 percent year on year to VND1,838 per share ($0.07).

The bank reported VND14.58 trillion ($557 million) in net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders, about 1.7 times the figure in the first half of 2025.

Vietbank followed with EPS of VND697 ($0.027), up 48.6 percent. Its profit attributable to ordinary shareholders reached VND750.8 billion ($28.7 million), 1.9 times the year-earlier level.

Several other banks also recorded notable increases.

OCB's EPS rose 33.1 percent to VND732 ($0.028), Nam A Bank's climbed 29.1 percent to VND1,224 ($0.047), MB's increased 26.5 percent to VND1,955 ($0.075), and Techcombank's gained 14.3 percent to VND1,979 ($0.076).

At the other end of the spectrum, Eximbank saw EPS fall 55.4 percent year on year to VND279 ($0.011), from VND625 ($0.024).

Its profit attributable to ordinary shareholders also declined 55.4 percent to VND519.6 billion ($19.85 million)

SeABank's EPS dropped 53.6 percent to VND595 ($0.023), while Sacombank's fell 49.4 percent to VND1,555 ($0.059).

Banks with the highest EPS

By absolute value, Vietcombank topped the group with EPS of VND2,872 (about $0.11) per share in the first half of 2026.

Profit attributable to ordinary shareholders reached nearly VND24 trillion ($917 million), up 36.9 percent year on year, helping lift the bank's EPS by nearly 37 percent.

VietinBank ranked second with EPS of VND2,660 ($0.10).

Techcombank, MB, and VPBank followed with VND1,979 ($0.076), VND1,955 ($0.075), and VND1,838 ($0.070) per share, respectively.

A higher EPS generally means a company generates more profit for each share, but the figure alone does not determine whether a stock is attractive.

Investors typically compare EPS with the market price through the P/E ratio, which shows how much investors are paying for each unit of earnings.

Longer-term EPS trends can also provide a clearer view of whether a company is able to sustain earnings growth and its competitive position over time.
