Why were Thai fans angry despite 2-0 win over Vietnam?

Thailand may have beaten Vietnam 2-0 and booked a place in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup final, but the victory still triggered a wave of criticism from Thai fans.

Their frustration centered not on the result, but on how Anthony Hudson’s side achieved it.

Thailand gained an early advantage when Sarach Yooyen scored with an unstoppable long-range strike in the 10th minute. From then on, they dropped deep and focused on shutting down Vietnam’s attacking threat.

The approach proved highly effective, leaving Kim Sang Sik’s side with little space to operate. Thailand then added a second goal late in the match through Chaiyaphon Otton to seal the victory.

Still, the defensive approach sparked a backlash at home.

Thai sports outlet Siamsport reported the backlash shortly after the match, saying fans were furious with the national team’s style of play, particularly its “parking the bus” approach against Vietnam.

“Thailand have secured a place in the final after beating Vietnam 2-0, but the team has come under heavy criticism for playing as if they were simply waiting to be attacked, defending almost entirely in their own half,” Siamsport wrote.

The outlet said fans also questioned what such an approach could mean for Thailand at the Asian level.

On social media, some supporters raised broader concerns about the national team’s direction under Hudson, arguing that retreating with all 11 players into their own half against fellow Southeast Asian opponents was too conservative and did not reflect Thailand’s long-term ambitions.

They also feared that continuing with the same style could leave the team struggling against stronger Asian opposition.

Similar criticism had already emerged earlier in the 2026 ASEAN Cup, with Hudson repeatedly favoring a cautious setup.

Thailand commit 20 fouls as defensive plan pays off

The match statistics also underlined Thailand’s pragmatic approach.

According to Sofascore, Hudson’s side committed 20 fouls, compared with just four by Vietnam, as they repeatedly disrupted Kim Sang Sik’s players and prevented them from building momentum.

Vietnam were awarded 21 free kicks, compared with eight for Thailand.

Kritsada Kaman and Anan Yodsangwal were both shown yellow cards, while no Vietnamese player was booked.

Thailand also conceded possession, seeing just 42 percent of the ball, but they were far more efficient in attack.

The Thais registered seven shots on target from nine attempts, with two producing goals. Vietnam took 12 shots but managed only four on target, with several efforts coming from outside the penalty area.

Midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin, who played the full 90 minutes, defended the team’s approach after the match.

“I think the most important thing was that we followed the coach’s tactics,” he said.

“What mattered was playing in the right way because we were facing a strong team and it was a very difficult match.”

Chanathip also said he was delighted to beat Vietnam again after a long wait.

“Personally, I had not beaten Vietnam for a long time, probably around five years,” he said.

“I have seen Vietnam improve a lot during that period and become much stronger. I am really happy that we were able to beat a team that had gone unbeaten for 26 matches.”

With six points from two matches, Thailand have secured their place in the Division 1 final with one group-stage game still to play.
