Woman gives birth on flight from Denmark to Ho Chi Minh City

The national flag air carrier said on Sunday that flight VN38, operated by a Boeing 787, had to alter its route after passenger N.L.D.L., a Vietnamese national, unexpectedly went into labor.

About 10 hours after take-off, the passenger, who was pregnant, began showing signs of labor.

The cabin crew immediately provided initial medical assistance and made an announcement asking whether any passengers with medical expertise could help.

Five passengers volunteered to assist the crew, and the baby was delivered on board.

After the delivery, the mother's condition was considered unstable.

She needed access to medical facilities for further examination and treatment.

As such, the flight crew decided to divert the plane to Yangon International Airport in Myanmar rather than continue its scheduled nonstop journey to Ho Chi Minh City.

Upon receiving the crew's report, the airline coordinated with its ground service provider in Myanmar and airport authorities to arrange medical assistance.

After the aircraft landed in Yangon, the mother and newborn were taken to a hospital for further monitoring and treatment.

The diversion disrupted the flight's schedule.

Once the medical assistance arrangements had been completed, the aircraft departed Yangon at 3:30 am on Sunday (local time) and resumed its journey to Vietnam.

Flight VN38 landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City at 6:05 am the same day.

The airline said the decision to divert the aircraft was made to ensure that the mother and baby could reach medical care as quickly as possible, despite the additional costs and operational disruption caused by the change of route.

Other Vietnam Airlines flights diverted for medical emergencies

This is not the first time a Vietnam Airlines flight has had to alter its route because of a passenger's medical emergency.

On June 24, flight VN524 from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai was diverted to Hong Kong to provide emergency medical assistance to a passenger.

Also, on January 7, flight VN36 from Frankfurt to Hanoi landed in Kolkata, India due to a medical emergency.

Flight VN30 from Frankfurt to Ho Chi Minh City was also diverted, landing in Istanbul, Turkey on September 17 last year.

The airline advises passengers, particularly those with existing health concerns or those who are pregnant, to assess their health condition before traveling.

Passengers experiencing unusual or concerning symptoms are encouraged to consult a doctor and carefully consider whether they are fit to fly, in order to reduce potential risks during the journey.
