A hundred DIY (Do It Yourself) mini models representing Saigon, the former name of Ho Chi Minh City, in the 1990s were displayed at a two-day exhibition last weekend.

The event, titled “Co Mot Sai Gon” (There Was An Old Saigon), was held on Saturday and Sunday by Sai Gon Xua (Old Saigon), a group of young people creating handmade items to recollect the old but gold things about Ho Chi Minh City.

Miniatures made by Sai Gon Xua of hairdressers, tailors and grocery stores, as well as sidewalk stalls, all typical establishments of the southern Vietnamese city in the good old days, were showcased at the exhibition to help young generations imagine how Ho Chi Minh City looked 20 years ago.

The exhibits also helped conjure up good memories in the former generation’s mind, according to the organizers.

Visitors were encouraged to bring along items of their childhood to exchange for some of those on display at the exhibition or take part in crafting miniatures of the Saigon in their hearts.

The event also featured Vietnamese journalist Trac Thuy Mieu in a talk about Saigon in each generation’s point of view, through which attendees, young and old, got to know how the city had changed over the last two decades.

“Saigon is always precious in her people’s hearts and will remain unchanged as time goes by,” Mieu said.
