2 long-abandoned markets in Hanoi show contrasting fates

Two large markets in Hanoi, each spanning thousands of square meters, have had very different outcomes after years of neglect. One is finally being completed, while the other remains deserted.

Xuan Phuong Market nears completion

Located in Xuan Phuong Ward, Xuan Phuong Market had been left idle for years, with weeds overtaking its grounds.

Since April this year, construction has resumed to finish the project, said local resident Nguyen Vinh Nguyen.

The outdoor trading area now has concrete flooring, metal roofing, and lighting installed.

The main building has been repainted, and water and electricity systems are being connected.

Nguyen and other local residents expressed hope that the market will open soon, reducing the need to travel far for daily shopping.

However, some residents of Alley 123 Phuong Canh, behind the market, worry that traffic congestion could worsen unless Foresa 4 Road running past the market is completed to improve access.

A representative of the ward’s infrastructure project management board told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper on Friday that the board is rushing to complete the market’s remaining works.

The official said the market is expected to be operational by the final quarter of this year.

Phuc Ly Market still empty

In contrast, Phuc Ly Market in Tay Tuu Ward, completed in 2017 with a floor area of more than 3,900 square meters, has remained unused.

Despite its size and modern facilities, no vendors have moved in.

Vuong Duy Manh, a local resident, said it was unfortunate that the market had been completed years ago but remained empty.

He hopes the ward’s administration will soon relocate informal markets in the area to Phuc Ly Market, making shopping more convenient for residents and preventing public assets from being wasted.

Aside from being accustomed to shopping at Dam Market, residents said that the location of Phuc Ly Market is another reason vendors and shoppers have shown little interest in it.

The market is located next to Tay Thang Long Street, while a road connecting Tay Thang Long Street with the Pheo River remains unfinished, making it difficult to connect the market with nearby residential areas.

Residents currently have to take a detour to reach the market.

Du An Dong, head of the Phuc Ly Market management team, said the team is encouraging vendors at Dam Market, Cong Nen Market, and Nga Ba Market to relocate to Phuc Ly.

The management team has also assigned staff to remain on duty around the clock to maintain security and environmental sanitation at the market.

Officials hope that once the road linking Tay Thang Long Street to the Pheo River is completed, accessibility will improve and vendors will be more willing to move in.
