The patient, identified as T.O. from Hanoi, conceived through in vitro fertilization.
She carried a boy weighing 2.9 kilograms and a girl weighing 2.4 kilograms to 38 weeks before undergoing a cesarean section on Monday.
According to Ha Cam Thuong, deputy head of the hospital’s voluntary obstetrics department, the mother had a history of cesarean delivery and gestational diabetes, requiring daily insulin treatment.
Her pregnancy was closely monitored, with doctors carefully managing each indicator to ensure safety for both mother and babies.
The surgery posed significant risks, particularly with anesthesia, but the medical team’s experience and coordination ensured success.
Both infants were born in good health with strong reflexes, while the mother’s condition stabilized after the operation.
Doctors emphasized that pregnancies at advanced maternal age carry heightened risks, including complications for both mother and child.
They advised that women aged over 50 who become pregnant should receive specialized care, detailed information about potential complications, and strict monitoring at experienced medical facilities.
While rare, the case highlights that motherhood remains a personal right and choice.
With proper medical support, even high-risk pregnancies can be managed safely.
