AI cameras detect over 1,000 traffic violations in Hanoi after 1 week of operation

The most common offense was failing to obey traffic light signals, accounting for 626 cases.

Another 361 cases were related to riders not wearing helmets.

The system also detected many cases of passenger buses picking up or dropping off passengers in no-stopping or no-parking zones.

The city’s traffic police division said that seven days after the launch of the Hanoi Smart Traffic Control Center, vehicle throughput at key junctions had increased, while congestion had eased significantly.

Public compliance with traffic regulations showed clear signs of improvement.

The division emphasized that the handling of violations is carried out objectively and transparently through an electronic system.

Police also conducted assessments at multiple intersections along major traffic corridors, including Tran Phu, Tran Hung Dao, Pho Hue, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Thai Hoc, and Giai Phong-Truong Chinh.

A comparison of traffic volumes during the same time frames before the launch of the AI camera system on December 12 and after one week of operation on December 19 showed that all intersections equipped with AI-controlled traffic lights recorded increased vehicle throughput.

The increase in traffic flow varied between about four percent and more than 18 percent.

Notably, traffic at Tran Phu-Hoang Dieu Intersection rose by over 18 percent, while Tran Hung Dao-Ba Trieu and Tran Hung Dao-Quang Trung Intersections saw gains of some 15-16 percent.

The Hanoi Smart Traffic Control Center officially began operations on December 13, marking the start of large-scale electronic traffic enforcement across the city.

The center serves as the command hub for 1,837 cameras of various types, all directly connected to traffic signal controllers and integrated with AI.

The automated control system is built on a comprehensive traffic flow database and adapts in real time using camera data from 195 signalized intersections, out of a total of 564 traffic light junctions transferred from the municipal Department of Construction in early October.

In addition, pan-tilt-zoom cameras capable of panning, tilting, and zooming expand monitoring coverage to support security and public order operations.
