Storm Wipha
-- Heavy rainfall from storm Wipha, the third to enter the East Vietnam Sea this year, has pushed flood inflows into the Ban Ve hydropower reservoir in north-central Nghe An Province to critical levels, exceeding the design flood capacity by nearly 3,000 cubic meters per second. Water levels on the Ca River at the Muong Xen, Thach Giam and Con Cuong stations have risen 4.7 to nearly eight meters above Alarm Level III – the highest level in Vietnam’s three-tier flood alert system.
-- Floodwaters rose in the mountainous areas of Nghe An Province on Tuesday, sweeping away a bridge and cutting off access to several households, local authorities said.
-- Around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, a seven-meter section of a dike collapsed and about 300 meters was overtopped near the Cu La sluice in Hong Vu Commune, northern Hung Yen Province, authorities said. The area, formerly part of old Thai Binh Province, is home to 42 households.
-- Tidal surges following storm Wipha flooded several inner-city streets in northern Hai Phong City on Tuesday evening, local authorities said.
Society
-- Leaders of Laos and Japan sent condolences following a tourist boat capsizing in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay that killed 37 people, with 10 rescued and two still missing as of Tuesday.
-- A Laotian man and woman were arrested at the Vietnam–Laos border while carrying 17 kilograms of crystal meth and 6,000 synthetic drug pills, the Border Guard Command of north-central Quang Tri Province said on Tuesday.
-- Gia Binh Airport in northern Bac Ninh Province has been re-designed to increase its capacity to around 30 million passengers per year for the 2021–30 period and approximately 50 million passengers per year by 2050, according to a decision recently issued by the Ministry of Construction.
-- Vietnam records about 24,600 new breast cancer cases and more than 10,000 resultant deaths annually, according to data from GLOBOCAN. The country also reports over 4,600 new cervical cancer cases and more than 2,500 resulting deaths each year.
Economy
-- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday evening instructed officials to expedite the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Abu Dhabi and Ho Chi Minh City’s proposed international financial center, during a meeting with heads of Vietnam’s diplomatic missions abroad.
-- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Yukihito Honda, CEO of Sumitomo Corporation’s urban development division, on Tuesday afternoon, during which the company expressed its desire for the North Hanoi smart city project to become a symbol of Vietnam–Japan cooperation.
