Da Nang orders $18.9mn emergency embankment project to curb erosion

Da Nang City in central Vietnam has ordered the urgent construction of embankments worth about VND498 billion (US$18.9 million) to address erosion along the Thu Bon River and the nearby Hoi An coast, authorities said on Friday.

The project targets riverbank erosion in Duy Nghia Commune and coastal erosion in Hoi An, where sections of the riverbank and shoreline are at risk.

About VND210 billion ($8 million) will fund a nearly 1.5-km embankment along the Thu Bon River in An Luong area, aimed at reinforcing the bank and protecting residential areas.

Another VND288 billion ($10.9 million) will be used to build a nearly 2-km coastal embankment in Hoi An to prevent erosion and support beach recovery.

Authorities have instructed the investor to expedite procedures, including surveying, design and construction, while ensuring compliance with regulations.

Construction is expected to be completed this year, with relevant agencies tasked with coordinating implementation.

The decision follows severe storms in late 2025 that caused erosion near Cua Dai bridge and along An Bang and Tan Thanh beaches, prompting residents and local forces to build temporary sandbag barriers to protect homes and tourism facilities.
