The quake struck at 4:42 pm at a depth of 16.5 kilometers.

Nguyen Xuan Anh, head of the center, said the event posed no disaster risk, though monitoring is continuing.

Elsewhere, five smaller earthquakes ranging from magnitude-2.5 to -3.4 were recorded on Tuesday in Mang Ri and Mang But Communes of Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam. All were classified as level-0 natural disaster risks.

From Sunday to Monday, Mang Ri and Mang But experienced a series of 27 quakes, including a magnitude-4.9 event early on Monday morning that caused strong shaking.

A preliminary report from local authorities said the seismic activity damaged two classrooms, nine student dormitory rooms, and two homes in Mang But and Mang Den Communes.

In Vietnam, quakes measuring 3.0 to 3.9 are typically considered weak and rarely cause damage, though light shaking may be felt.

Earthquakes between 4.0 and 5.0 are categorized as light and may cause minor structural damage.

Globally, more than 100,000 earthquakes in the 3.0-3.9 range and 10,000-15,000 in the 4.0-5.0 range are recorded each year.
