The system, rolled out after more than four months of testing, integrates upgraded multi-standard card readers at 12 stations, AI cameras for facial recognition, and connections to the national citizen database to verify passenger identities through the VNeID application.
Passengers can now use chip-enabled ID cards, NFC, QR codes, or bank cards to pay for tickets.
Since trial operations began on August 20, nearly 71,000 passengers registered and the system recorded more than 344,000 uses, Hanoi Metro said.
Cash payments remain available, but buyers now receive QR codes instead of traditional tickets.
Hanoi Metro plans to extend the system to eight stations on the Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station line by the end of December and complete upgrades for both lines by January 31, 2026, with full operation expected in February.
