The return of rain is attributed to a slight strengthening of the southwest monsoon and improved upper-level wind convergence, while the subtropical high pressure system that caused the hot, cloudless weather has weakened and moved offshore.
On Sunday, southern provinces and cities will possibly experience changing cloud cover with intermittent sunshine.
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast from noon to evening, with some areas seeing moderate to heavy rainfall.
Early showers are likely in the Mekong Delta, but major downpours are expected in Tay Ninh Province, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, and An Giang Province.
Thunderstorms may bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts.
Low-lying areas near rivers and poorly drained inland zones could face flooding during intense rainfall.
From early next week, a strong low-pressure trough is expected to extend across the central and south-central regions, with the southwest monsoon further intensifying.
Southern Vietnam will likely see intermittent sunshine during the day, followed by widespread showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, including some heavy to very heavy rains.
While the rain could be significant, it will not last all day, with most thunderstorms occurring from midday to evening.
Mornings are forecast to be mostly cloudy with occasional sunshine, typical of the southern region’s rainy season.
