Intense rainfall floods southern Vietnamese province after scorching days

Following days of extreme heat, a heavy downpour swept through central wards of Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam on Tuesday evening, flooding several major roads and disrupting daily life.

After just 30 minutes of rain, localized flooding occurred along main roads such as Dong Khoi, Nguyen Ai Quoc, and Bui Trong Nghia.

The worst-hit area was the Trang Dai intersection in Trang Dai Ward, where water levels rose above the midpoint of motorbike wheels.

From Alley 68, torrents of water poured onto Dong Khoi Street like a waterfall, creating powerful currents that stalled vehicles and made travel hazardous.

Floodwaters rose over sidewalks and flowed into roadside homes, disrupting both the daily activities and business operations of local residents.

Within about 20 minutes, rainwater drained into the roadside system, allowing traffic to return to normal.

However, the flooded area on Dong Khoi Street has become notorious in recent years for recurring inundation after heavy rain.

"This spot floods every year. Every time it rains heavily, water rushes out like a waterfall," said Tho, a resident of Trang Dai Ward.

Locals explained that Alley 68 used to have a stream to channel surface water into the drainage system.

However, the stream was later encroached upon and covered with concrete slabs, forcing water to flow openly onto the street.

The alley, which is narrow, steep, and handles a large volume of rainwater, now sends stormwater run-off directly onto the median strip of Dong Khoi Street like a cascade.

Local inhabitants have called on authorities to consider dredging the former stream or installing additional surface water drains to address the persistent flooding.
