Historic steam trains tested on Hue-Da Nang route through Vietnam’s Hai Van Pass

Two historic steam locomotives dating back to the 1960s have completed a technical trial run on the railway linking Hue and Da Nang through Hai Van Pass, as Vietnam Railways assesses their safety and potential return to service.

A representative of the Thua Thien Hue Railway Operations Branch under Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) said on Sunday evening that the two locomotives were tested with both freight and passenger carriages.

The trial was aimed at evaluating bridge and track load capacity, the condition of the locomotives, and their ability to meet technical operating requirements.

The representative said the test was carried out under a detailed plan prepared by VNR’s specialized departments.

“This is a technical inspection aimed at collecting data for an operational assessment report,” the representative told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper.

“Official conclusions on the trial and whether the steam locomotives can be put into service will depend on the final assessment by the professional council and VNR after the entire testing process is completed.”

Photos provided by the railway operator showed the locomotives hauling freight and passenger carriages along sections of Hai Van Pass, including through Railway Tunnel No. 12.

The two French-style Mikado steam locomotives entered service in the 1960s and are among the last steam locomotives in Vietnam still capable of operating.

They have been meticulously restored by technical experts to ensure safe operation while preserving their historical features.

The trial comes as Hue City and VNR study plans to develop a steam-powered tourist train service on the Hue-Da Nang route.

At a meeting in mid-September, the two sides reviewed the operation of the existing Hue-Da Nang heritage train and agreed to continue exploring new railway tourism products that capitalize on the scenery, heritage, and travel experiences along the route.

Under the plan, a steam-powered train could offer tourists a new experience between the two cities, particularly on the scenic stretch through Hai Van Pass.

Hue and VNR are also studying the possibility of adding a stop in the pass area, allowing passengers more time to sightsee, enjoy the scenery, and take photos.

The proposed stop is expected to make the journey more attractive and enhance the overall travel experience.

Building on the existing heritage train service, Hue and VNR also plan to expand railway tourism products linked to heritage, scenery, resorts, medical tourism, and wellness services.

The “Central Heritage Connection” tourist train, jointly launched by VNR and the authorities of Hue and Da Nang, began operations on March 26, 2024.

The service currently operates two pairs of trains, HD1/2 and HD3/4, each day.
