On Thursday evening, the Cuban Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City said it had worked with the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) and Sovico Group to organize a light projection on Saigon Marina IFC to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Cuban leader Fidel Castro (August 13, 1926 - August 13, 2026).
From 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, the building displayed the Cuban national flag, images of Castro, and messages celebrating his 100th birth anniversary.

Castro led the 1959 Cuban Revolution that overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, later serving as Cuba's prime minister from 1959 to 1976 and president until 2008.
He was also first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1965 to 2011.
Castro had a close relationship with Vietnam and helped lay the foundation for diplomatic ties between the two countries, established in 1960.
In 1966, he famously expressed Cuba's solidarity with Vietnam, saying the country was willing to give "even its blood" for Vietnam.
In September 1973, just eight months after the Paris Peace Accords, Castro became the first and only foreign head of state to visit areas of South Vietnam under revolutionary control.
On September 15, 1973, Castro visited Hill 241, the former U.S. Carol military base, expressing his strong support for the Khe Sanh troops and their victory.
He made three official visits to Vietnam, in 1973, 1995, and 2003.
