How to experience Hanoi in autumn in one day

Autumn is a good time to explore Hanoi through short itineraries, from walking around the Old Quarter and visiting old apartment blocks to having coffee, trying green rice-flake sticky rice or spending an afternoon by West Lake.

Even with only one day, visitors can combine sightseeing, food and experiences at some of the capital's most characteristic destinations.

Where to experience Hanoi in autumn?

Nguyen My Linh, who lives and works in Hanoi, said familiar destinations such as Hoan Kiem Lake, St. Joseph's Cathedral, the Old Quarter, Phan Dinh Phung Street, West Lake and old apartment blocks are still worth visiting in autumn.

Visitors do not necessarily have to look for a quiet place to experience the season, Linh said.

Sitting at a cafe with an old-style setting in the Old Quarter and watching people pass by, along with cyclo pedicabs and street vendors, is also a way to discover Hanoi.

Visitors can start at Hoan Kiem Lake, walk through the Old Quarter, visit Ngoc Son Temple and St. Joseph's Cathedral, then continue to the Temple of Literature or Hoa Lo Prison relic site.

Those looking for a change of scenery can spend the afternoon at West Lake, combining a walk around the lake with sunset views.

Visitors arriving in Hanoi in late September can also combine their trip with the 2026 Hanoi Autumn Festival, themed "Hanoi Autumn - Journey of Emotions," which will take place from September 25 to 27 at Thong Nhat Park.

The festival will feature nine experience spaces covering about 5,000 square meters.

What to eat in Hanoi in autumn?

Green rice flakes, known as 'com', are among the seasonal specialties most associated with Hanoi in autumn.

Visitors can try 'com' from Vong Village, green rice-flake sticky rice or other dishes made with 'com'.

Linh also recommends familiar dishes such as 'pho', steamed rice rolls and 'bun thang', a traditional Hanoi noodle soup typically served with rice vermicelli, shredded chicken, Vietnamese pork sausage and egg, for breakfast.

For lunch, she suggests 'bun cha', grilled pork served with rice vermicelli and fresh herbs, or 'bun dau', rice vermicelli served with fried tofu and fresh herbs.

On cooler days, visitors can try pork rib cartilage porridge, hot 'banh duc', a soft rice cake served warm, grilled corn, roasted chestnuts or fried fermented pork rolls.

Egg coffee is another option for those looking for a drink associated with Hanoi.

Linh said the Nha Tho Street area is suitable for combining green rice-flake sticky rice with lemon tea or coffee.

Egg coffee can be found at Giang Cafe, while pork rib cartilage porridge is available in the area opposite Dong Xuan Market and hot 'banh duc' on Lo Duc Street.

In the evening, visitors can try grilled fish, West Lake shrimp cakes or Trang Tien ice cream before continuing their walk around the city.

What to do in Hanoi in one day?

For first-time visitors with only one day in Hanoi, Linh suggests starting at Ba Dinh Square in the morning and then heading along Phan Dinh Phung Street.

The morning is suitable for walking and taking photos before moving toward the city center.

After breakfast with 'pho', steamed rice rolls or 'bun thang', visitors can continue to St. Joseph's Cathedral and the Old Quarter.

They can stop for green rice-flake sticky rice and lemon tea before visiting Ngoc Son Temple, the Temple of Literature or Hoa Lo Prison.

The afternoon can be spent having coffee, trying sweet soups or sampling snacks in the Old Quarter.

For those who want to reduce walking, a double-decker bus is an option for sightseeing along central streets.

Visitors can then head to West Lake to watch the sunset.

In the evening, fish cakes, West Lake shrimp cakes or a cold ice cream can round off the day.
