Nearly 200 residents evacuated as 227kg war-era bomb destroyed in Vietnam’s Quang Tri

A war-era bomb weighing 227 kilograms was safely detonated this week in the Ben Hai River in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam, authorities said, after about 200 local residents were evacuated from nearby homes.

The Quang Tri Provincial Military Command, working with the nonprofit NPA/RENEW, handled the bomb in Cay Tam Village, Ben Quan Commune.

Authorities identified the device as a U.S.-made MK82 general-purpose bomb containing 87 kilograms of explosives.

Its remote and difficult-to-access location made transport to a standard disposal site unsafe.

Local officials evacuated 43 households, totaling 196 people, before the disposal operation.

The bomb was first reported by residents on Sunday after it was spotted in the river.
