Northern, central Vietnam brace for heavy rains up to 600mm

Northern and central Vietnam are expected to experience severe rainfall from Friday evening through Sunday, with some areas forecast to receive up to 600 millimeters of rain due to a tropical depression and an active intertropical convergence zone, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

From Friday night through Saturday, rainfall totals of 50-100 millimeters are expected across the northern delta and midland regions as well as in Da Nang City.

Some areas may see over 200 millimeters.

The central provinces from Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City could see 100-200 millimeters, with certain localities potentially exceeding 350 millimeters.

The rain is likely to continue through Sunday, with cumulative totals reaching 100-200 millimeters in northern and midland areas and in Da Nang.

Between Thanh Hoa and Hue, rainfall may accumulate between 150 and 350 millimeters, with localized downpours possibly pushing totals to 400 millimeters in the north and 600 millimeters in the central region.

The national weather agency has issued warnings about elevated risks of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, as well as flooding in low-lying urban and industrial zones.

The tropical depression currently over the East Vietnam Sea is expected to intensify into a storm and could make landfall in the central provinces between Nghe An and Da Nang around Saturday evening.

Earlier in the week, storm Kajiki, the fifth named storm to enter the East Vietnam Sea this year, caused widespread downpours across northern and north-central Vietnam from Monday to Tuesday.

The heavy rains led to serious flooding on Hanoi streets on Tuesday morning and forced the evacuation of thousands in Thanh Hoa.

As of Wednesday, floodwaters had not yet receded in some parts of Thanh Hoa's Ham Rong Ward, where hundreds of homes remained submerged.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents in high-risk areas to stay alert and follow official guidance.
