On Thursday, Sun Group said construction crews were working at full speed on the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport in Phu Quoc Special Zone ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum scheduled to take place on Phu Quoc in November 2027.
The T2 terminal, whose overall design is inspired by a rising fire phoenix symbolizing a 'new era of growth,' is also being built at a fast pace.
As of September 2026, about 95 percent of the concrete structural work on the T2 terminal had been completed, along with 95 percent of the plastering work and about 60 percent of the baggage-handling system.
Crews are also installing glass, roofing and interior decorations.
The VIP terminal, inspired by a sea eagle and spanning nearly 1 hectare of floor space, is also nearing completion.
It will be used to receive heads of state and other high-ranking delegations of around 300 people attending APEC 2027.
So far, 100 percent of the VIP terminal’s concrete structural work has been completed, while the roof is largely finished.
Interior construction and plastering are also being accelerated.

Mai Dinh Khoa, the official overseeing finishing work on the Phu Quoc airport expansion project, said the VIP terminal’s roofing, masonry and plastering works are expected to be completed between September and October 2026, depending on the specific component.
All interior fittings, technical systems and operating equipment are expected to be completed by March 2027, ensuring the terminal is ready before APEC 2027.
Once Phase 1 of the Phu Quoc airport expansion project is completed and operational, the airport is expected to handle 20 million to 24 million passengers a year, helping make Phu Quoc one of Vietnam’s highest-capacity airports.
Phase 1 is scheduled to begin operations in April 2027.
