The tournament is taking place at Global City and runs through Sunday.

It marks the debut of a PPA Asia event in Vietnam and the first PPA Asia competition to be held outdoors.

Organizers reported that all entries were filled during a three-week online registration period, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity.

The event features high-profile athletes such as Vietnam’s Trinh Linh Giang, who won the PPA Malaysia Open, and Huynh Thien Phuc, runner-up at the Fukuoka Open.

Ly Hoang Nam and Si Boi Ngoc also represent Vietnam, while Wong Hong Kit, champion of the Hong Kong Open, is another notable name in the draw.

From Australia, Mitchell Hargreaves, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, joins fellow countrymen Louis Laville, Harrison Brown, and 18-year-old Lucas Pascoe.

India’s Vanshik Kapadia, who reached the final of the Malaysia Open, is also competing.

The men’s singles competition is expected to see strong performances from Vietnamese players, while the women’s bracket includes top contenders like China’s Yufei Long, Taiwan’s Yu-Chieh Hsieh, Australia’s Nicola Schoeman, and Roos van Reek of the Netherlands, who won the Hong Kong Open.

Winners in the singles category will take home US$1,800, while doubles champions will receive $3,000.

The tournament awards 1,000 ranking points to singles champions and $150 to those reaching the round of 16, following standard PPA Asia procedures.

Matches are being played across four court clusters, including one championship-level court that meets PPA Asia’s competition standards.

Tickets for Friday’s matches are still available for VND185,000 ($7).

However, weekend passes have sold out, including VIP Daily tickets priced at VND630,000 ($24) and VVIP tickets at VND10 million ($379).

“This is the first ticketed pickleball event ever held in Vietnam,” said Nguyen Hai Long, pickleball development director at New Sports, one of the event’s co-organizers.

“We sold out 400 regular and 100 VIP tickets in just two hours.”

A second Vietnam stop on the PPA Asia tour is scheduled to take place in Da Nang later this year.
