10-year-old well shoots water 15 meters into the air in southern Vietnam

Local authorities have asked specialists to urgently determine the cause and assess potential risks to the environment and nearby residents.

A leader of the Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment said on Tuesday that the department had been informed of the incident in Hoa Binh Commune and would coordinate with relevant agencies to inspect the site and assess the unusual water discharge.

The incident occurred at around 9:45 am on Monday. 

The well belongs to Duong Thi Huong, a 73-year-old local, according to a preliminary report from the Hoa Binh People’s Committee.

The well has been used by Huong’s family for more than 10 years. 

The cause of the sudden and unusually powerful water discharge remains unknown.

The commune authorities said the phenomenon could be related to groundwater pressure or geological and hydrological conditions in the area.

If the discharge continues, it could lead to groundwater loss and affect the environment, soil stability, nearby structures, and the safety of local residents.

In response, the Hoa Binh Commune People’s Committee has asked the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment to urgently send specialists to inspect the well, assess the cause and level of danger, and determine potential impacts so that appropriate measures can be taken.

While awaiting the specialists’ assessment and guidance, local authorities will continue monitoring the situation, coordinate with relevant agencies, and advise residents not to tamper with the well opening to avoid safety risks.

Videos of the unusual phenomenon were shared on social media after some people noticed it, attracting considerable public curiosity and attention.
