Nguyen Thanh Phu, director of the provincial Department of Construction, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that a large volume of soil and rocks from the mountainside collapsed onto the vehicle as it passed through the pass in Nam Khanh Vinh Commune.
Prolonged heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides in the province’s mountainous area over the past few years.
A representative from Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that 32 passengers from the passenger bus were affected.
Six victims, including three men and three women, were confirmed dead.
The bodies of four people were removed from the vehicle, while two other victims remain trapped under the debris.
Rescuers used specialized equipment to cut through the crushed sections of the bus to retrieve the remaining bodies.
Meanwhile, as many as 19 others are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Most of the injured sustain trauma to the head, neck, spine, and abdomen, along with multiple limb fractures.
