An Phu Interchange underpass in Ho Chi Minh City temporarily closed due to flooding

As of Friday morning, the underpass was still filled with water.

At around 6:30 pm on Thursday, water began flooding the underpass of the An Phu Interchange.

According to Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper's observations and reader reports, water covered a roughly 100-meter section of the underpass, reaching about halfway up car wheels in some places.

As heavy rain continued, the water could not drain quickly enough, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.

Long lines of cars formed inside the underpass. Several vehicles were affected while passing through the flooded section, with some unable to continue after their engines were damaged by the water.

Rain continued in many parts of Ho Chi Minh City at around 8:30 pm, including the An Phu Interchange area.

A representative of the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of Ho Chi Minh City told Tuoi Tre that heavy rain had caused flooding in the An Phu underpass.

The agency temporarily closed the underpass to facilitate drainage and cleanup.

Additional pumps were being deployed to remove the water. Once the water had been pumped out, the underpass would be inspected before being reopened to traffic.

Notably, the pumping station serving the underpass was also inundated, making drainage more difficult.

A barrier around the station will be built on Friday to prevent water from flowing in the station, a board representative said.

The rainfall on Thursday evening was particularly heavy, while water from surrounding roads also flowed into the underpass, overwhelming the drainage system.

While the water is being pumped out, motorists are being directed to alternative routes, including the existing road to the interchange or the overpass toward Vo Nguyen Giap Street, to reduce congestion around the underpass.

Authorities advised motorists to choose alternative routes when traveling through the An Phu Interchange, particularly during heavy rain and while the underpass remains closed.

It is not yet known when the underpass will reopen to traffic.

Downpours lashed several parts of Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday evening, flooding streets and hampering traffic as commuters made their way home.

The rainfall was the heaviest recorded so far in 2026.
