Speedboat accident

-- Vietnam’s foreign ministry on Sunday said it was coordinating with authorities in An Giang Province, Phu Quoc Special Zone, Indian diplomatic missions, and other agencies to provide consular assistance, facilitate the arrival of representatives from India’s Tamil Nadu State, and repatriate the bodies of 15 Indian tourists killed in Saturday’s speedboat capsizing off Phu Quoc in accordance with their families’ wishes.

-- Authorities said four more Indian tourists were expected to leave Phu Quoc Island for home on Sunday night, while one previously critical survivor had recovered and another was scheduled to be transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment on Monday.

-- Hanoi plans to develop 10 inland cargo ports and one passenger port along the Red River in 2026 as part of its efforts to expand waterway transport, improve regional connectivity, and ease pressure on the city’s road network, the municipal government said.

-- Vietnam’s Disaster Management and Dyke Management Authority said heavy rain from July 8 to 11 triggered flash floods and landslides across six northern mountainous provinces, injuring one person, damaging 197 homes, more than 935 hectares of crops and transport and irrigation infrastructure, and disrupting power supply to 4,199 customers in Son La Province.

-- The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that many parts of the country are likely to experience continued showers and thunderstorms between Monday and July 21.

Economy

-- Germany-based industrial gases company Messer said it would invest US$37 million in a new industrial gas plant in Ho Chi Minh City with annual capacity of 200,000 metric tons, targeting production before the end of 2028 and supporting its expansion in Vietnam.

Travel

-- Da Nang’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said on Sunday that the 2026 Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, held from May 30 to July 11, attracted more than 2.72 million visitor stays, up nearly 45 percent from the 2025 festival, marking the highest visitor numbers since the event began in 2008.

-- “An explosive fire at a popular pub in Thailand’s capital Bangkok has killed 27 people, with another 22 injured in critical ‌condition,” Reuters quoted officials as saying on Monday, in one of the deadliest such incidents in the tourism hub in recent years.
