Central Vietnam's Bui Hui Plateau Festival lures thousands with vast grasslands, distinctive H’re culture

Bui Hui Plateau in Dang Thuy Tram Commune, Quang Ngai Province on Sunday came alive as the 2026 Bui Hui Plateau Festival took place under the theme 'Touch the Clouds, Touch Memories, Touch the Future.'

Held by the local commune amid green grassy slopes and purple rose myrtle hills, the festival offered visitors a chance to camp, fly kites, go trekking, watch the clouds, and immerse themselves in the culture of the local community.

Small tents were scattered across the plateau, while children ran across the grassy hills and adults sat chatting.

In the distance, mountain ranges stretched into the horizon, with clouds drifting above them.

Dozens of kites in different shapes filled the sky above the grasslands, turning the normally tranquil plateau into a lively scene.

Elsewhere, telescopes were set up for visitors to observe the surrounding mountains and forests.

Children took turns looking through them, delighted as distant mountain ranges suddenly appeared close and clear.

According to the Dang Thuy Tram Commune People’s Committee, an estimated 8,500 visitors and local residents came to the plateau during the festival.

This year’s festival also attracted visitors from outside the province, including groups from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The vast appeal of Bui Hui Plateau

Bui Hui does not feel like a crowded tourist destination.

What draws visitors to Bui Hui is its sense of endless space. For many, a trip to Bui Hui would not feel complete without standing on one of the hills, with green mountains behind them and an endless stretch of sky ahead.

As part of the festival, the 'Bui Hui Cloud Market' brought together a range of local products, including wild vegetables and other mountain specialties sold by local residents.

Also, Bui Hui’s rose myrtle berries have gradually become a local specialty associated with the plateau, allowing visitors to take home a taste of Bui Hui after their trip.

More than a scenic escape

While the grassy hills and clouds are what draw visitors to Bui Hui, its local culture adds greater depth to the experience.

On Sunday evening, as darkness fell, an arts program featuring songs and dances inspired by the mountains, forests and local H’re culture drew a large crowd.

This year’s festival was held on the occasion of Dang Thuy Tram Commune’s first anniversary.

The commune is named after Dang Thuy Tram, a Hanoi-born doctor, martyr and Hero of the People’s Armed Forces who worked in Quang Ngai and passed away in 1970.

As a result, the 'Touch Memories' theme is about more than H’re culture. It is also a reminder of a generation that lived, fought, and sacrificed their lives in wartime on this land.

'Touch the Future,' meanwhile, looks to the present, as Bui Hui is now being developed as a destination for ecotourism, cultural experiences, and outdoor activities.

Trekking, camping, kite flying, experiences, and the local market are opening up new ways for visitors to stay longer and gain a deeper understanding of the area.
