Child killed, several injured after local official’s car hits crowd in Vietnam

An eight-year-old child was killed and at least seven others were injured after a car driven by a senior local official plowed into a crowd in Phong Du Thuong Commune, Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam on Monday evening.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred during a music performance celebrating the success of the commune’s Party Congress at the Lang Chang village cultural house.

The driver was identified as Lo Van Manh, deputy secretary of the Phong Du Thuong Commune Party Committee.

Authorities said Manh was turning his car into the venue’s yard when the crash happened.

The injured victims were taken to a local medical center for treatment.

Commune officials accompanied the victims to provide support, while the child’s body was awaiting examination by investigators.

When asked about speculation that Manh was driving under the influence, the commune’s Party chief Luong Trung Dung told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday morning that he was not present when police questioned Manh and could not confirm the matter.

Police are investigating the cause of the fatal crash in accordance with the law.
