The incident happened on Thursday as the tourist was walking around central Da Nang and exploring the beach city.
While near the intersection of Ly Tu Trong and Tran Phu Streets in Hai Chau Ward, her iPhone slipped from her hand and fell through a narrow gap into a deep stormwater drain.
The drain opening was small and tight, making recovery extremely difficult.
At the time, Da Nang was experiencing persistent heavy rain, which further complicated the situation and increased the risk for anyone attempting to retrieve the device.
After receiving the report, officers from the Da Nang Fire Prevention, Firefighting, and Rescue Police Unit quickly arrived at the scene and coordinated with Hai Chau Ward police.

Using specialized equipment, they first pried open a concrete drain cover weighing several dozen kilograms.
Once the cover was removed, a police officer climbed down into the dark, foul smelling drain despite flowing water and poor visibility.
After a careful search, the officer located and retrieved the phone, returning it safely to the tourist.
The Hong Kong visitor was visibly moved when her phone was handed back.
She expressed heartfelt thanks to the Da Nang police officers, praising their professionalism and willingness to help in challenging conditions.

Local authorities said such incidents reflect their commitment to ensuring the safety and positive experiences of tourists visiting the city.
Da Nang is one of Vietnam's most popular coastal destinations and has made tourist assistance a key part of its public safety mission.
Earlier, police in An Hai Ward helped foreign tourists recover lost belongings on multiple occasions.
In one recent case, a South Korean visitor lost a handbag containing valuable items after dining at a local restaurant.
After receiving the report, An Hai Ward police verified information, reviewed relevant data, and coordinated with the restaurant owner and other units.
All items in the handbag were later returned intact to the tourist.
