A section of sidewalk where temperatures were measured at 40–50 degrees Celsius is seen in Ung Hoa Commune, Hanoi, Vietnam in this image taken from a video released by Vietnam Television.
Le Anh Tung, deputy chairman of the Ung Hoa People’s Committee, said a metal lightning rod had come into contact with a damaged electrical wire in a wall crevice next to the site, causing heat to build up in the concrete surface.
Authorities and local resident Duong Van Truyen cut off the electricity supply after discovering the issue, Tung said, adding that the temperature of the sidewalk fell after the power was disconnected.
By Thursday morning, temperatures at the site had returned to normal.
The affected promenade section, measuring about one square meter, is located in front of Truyen’s house in Thu Noi Hamlet, Ung Hoa Commune.
Residents earlier reported strong heat from the concrete surface.
They drilled a small hole in the sidewalk and inserted a thermometer, which recorded about 42 degrees Celsius within about five seconds, according to local officials.
Temperatures in Hanoi have ranged between about 17 and 24 degrees Celsius in recent times.
