Female passengers attack taxi driver over extra pickup in northern Vietnam

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday and was captured by an in-car camera, with footage later circulating widely on social media.

Police in Mong Cai 1 Ward said they received a report from Nguyen Van Thanh, 54, at around 8:30 am.

He reported that his 28-year-old son, Nguyen Tien Dat, a taxi driver, had been assaulted and injured.

Police subsequently verified the report and summoned people believed to be involved for questioning.

According to the preliminary investigation, at around 2:20 am on the same day, Dat parked his taxi outside Lin Lounge 79 to pick up passengers.

Four people, including one man and three women, got into the vehicle.

Two women sat in the front passenger area, while the man and the other woman sat in the back.

Those passengers appeared to have consumed alcohol.

After the taxicab set off, the two women in the front asked Dat to turn around and pick up another friend.

Dat reportedly told them that the car could carry only four passengers and that he could not take anyone else.

The group then allegedly shouted at and attacked the driver, striking him in the head and face.

Footage from the taxi's interior showed the passengers arguing with Dat.

At one point, one of the three female passengers raised a wooden clog toward him, while another woman sitting in the back grabbed the driver's hair and violently pulled his head backward.

Other passengers also attacked him.

During the incident, Dat repeatedly shouted for help, calling out ‘robbery,’ before opening the door and fleeing toward Lin Lounge 79.

The assault did not end there.

According to police, members of the group got out of the taxi and, together with several other people, chased Dat.

They allegedly used their hands, feet, shoes and sticks to repeatedly beat him until he collapsed on the road.

Dat managed to escape into a karaoke room at the lounge and hide.

At around 3:00 am, another taxi driver took him to hospital for emergency treatment.

Based on the initial investigation, officers identified and summoned seven people allegedly involved in the assault for questioning.

They include four women and three men, aged from 20 to 48.

Police are establishing the full sequence of events to handle the case under the law.
