Flooding persists near apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thao Dien

Residents of Thu Thiem Sky apartment building in the Thao Dien area of Ho Chi Minh City are once again grappling with persistent flooding and stagnant water, even during periods without rain.

Several locations around the apartment building were submerged on Tuesday afternoon.

Floodwaters covered nearby streets and reached ankle height, severely disrupting residents’ daily activities in the neighborhood.

Many locals said the city had only just entered the early stages of the rainy season, yet widespread flooding and water stagnation had already become a recurring problem, making living conditions increasingly difficult.

Tran Do Gia Bao, deputy head of the management board at Thu Thiem Sky apartment building, said heavy rain on Monday quickly caused flooding in front of the building.

“On Tuesday morning, the water started to recede but drainage was extremely slow," Bao said.

“However, in the afternoon, the flooding returned, and water overflowed across the roads near the building."

On Wednesday afternoon, shallow floodwaters still covered parts of the nearby roads and emitted a foul odor despite the absence of rain in the area that day.

Bao noted that the pattern of water receding in the morning only to return later in the afternoon has continued repeatedly in recent weeks.

In response, authorities in An Khanh Ward and related agencies deployed water pumps to flooded sections in an effort to address the situation.

Despite those measures, flooding and stagnant water continue to persist in the area.
