Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tung, director of the Hanoi Department of Public Security, said the project’s phase two reflects the city’s push for digital transformation and smart urban management.

Of the new devices, 1,107 cameras will handle traffic violations, 960 will measure vehicle flow, 112 will monitor intersections, 251 PTZ cameras will oversee public order, and 30 will detect speeding violations.

The project also includes 57 servers, 36 traffic information screens, 100 traffic control cabinets, 930 camera poles, 475 kilometers of fiber optic cable, and 136 kilometers of power cable installed at 238 key intersections and gateways.

Compared with phase one, the upgraded system introduces features such as ‘green wave’ traffic control, AI-based congestion forecasting, and real-time alerts via VMS displays.

Aside from traffic management, the system has been expanded to monitor urban order and environmental violations, including illegal dumping, unauthorized entry into restricted areas, and public disturbances.

The new cameras raise Hanoi’s total AI surveillance network to nearly 5,000 units.

From July 15, the Vietnamese capital will also activate 36 electronic traffic boards to provide real-time updates, helping drivers choose routes and reduce congestion.

In December last year, Hanoi police launched the project’s phase one with 1,837 AI-powered cameras along 25 major streets and 195 key intersections.

According to authorities, the system has proven effective in traffic command, public safety monitoring, and criminal investigations.

It has helped enforcement forces track suspects and resolve complex incidents quickly.
