Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the anniversary, Secretary Quang said the renaming of Saigon-Gia Dinh by the sixth National Assembly on July 2, 1976 was both a historic honor and a responsibility entrusted to the city.

He said Ho Chi Minh City must preserve and build on the heroic traditions of Saigon-Gia Dinh while continuing to innovate and contribute more to the country’s development.

Quang said the city’s achievements over the past five decades reflected the contributions of businesses, intellectuals, artists, the armed forces, overseas Vietnamese, international partners, and millions of residents.

He said the merger of the former Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong Province, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province last year created new opportunities for growth beyond an expansion of administrative boundaries.

Quang also cited Politburo Resolution No. 09 on developing Ho Chi Minh City in a new era, saying it reaffirmed the principle that the city develops for Vietnam and the country supports the city.

He said the city would continue to promote unity, innovation, and efficient use of resources, while building a modern and transparent administration, improving people’s living standards, and creating better conditions for businesses to grow.
