The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has sent the proposal to the municipal People’s Council seeking approval of the investment policy for the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge project.
The proposal will be considered at the council’s seventh session, scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday.
The Thu Thiem 4 Bridge project has a total length of 2.16 kilometers, starting at Nguyen Van Linh Street, near the Tan Thuan 2 Bridge in Tan Thuan Ward, and end at Nguyen Co Thach Street in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in An Khanh Ward.
The bridge is designed with eight lanes, including six motor vehicle lanes and two mixed-traffic lanes.
The total estimated investment exceeds VND5.063 trillion, funded entirely by the city’s budget.
The project is proposed to be divided into two components.
The first covers land clearance, compensation, support, and resettlement, with an estimated cost of about VND1.385 trillion ($53 million).
The second component focuses on bridge construction, with a projected cost of approximately VND3.679 trillion ($140 million).
The city’s Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board has been assigned as the investor for both components.
Under the proposed timeline, compensation, support, and resettlement work will be carried out from the third quarter of 2026 through the first quarter of 2027.
Contractor selection and construction are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2026, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2028.
The municipal administration said the investment is urgent and necessary.
Key infrastructure in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area such as main arterial roads, technical infrastructure in the northern residential zone, and Nguyen Co Thach Street, is largely complete and expected to be operational this year.
However, Thu Thiem currently connects mainly to the existing city center areas of Saigon and Thanh My Tay Wards, while lacking direct links to Xom Chieu Ward, Tan Thuan Ward, and the southern urban area.
The Thu Thiem 4 Bridge is therefore identified as a critical project to synchronize infrastructure across the area in line with the master plan approved by the prime minister.
Once completed, the bridge will form a new east-south traffic corridor, linking southern Ho Chi Minh City with the central area and former Thu Duc City to the east.
It is expected to reduce traffic pressure on major routes such as Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, the Khanh Hoi Bridge, the Kenh Te Bridge, the Ong Lanh Bridge, and the Nguyen Van Cu Bridge.
The bridge will also complement other major projects, including the An Phu Interchange, National Highway 50, Ring Roads 2 and 3, elevated roads, and radial expressways, gradually creating a synchronized regional transport network.
According to the proposal, after the People’s Council approves the investment policy, the Department of Construction will be assigned to guide the investor in coordinating with relevant agencies to organize an architectural design competition in line with regulations.
