Artificial intelligence-powered traffic cameras in Ho Chi Minh City recorded more than 3,100 violations between September 1 and October 3, local police said on Sunday, in an early test of the city’s automated enforcement system.

The violations included speeding, running red lights, and illegal lane changes, according to the municipal traffic police division.

Images and data collected are verified by officers before fines are issued.

Authorities have installed AI-enabled cameras at key intersections and high-traffic zones, with plans to expand coverage further.

Officials said the technology has already helped reduce traffic violations in monitored areas.

Ho Chi Minh City currently operates 31 AI cameras, in addition to hundreds of standard surveillance units across its urban network.

The system is part of Vietnam's broader effort to modernize traffic enforcement and reduce road accidents.

Police said they are working with telecom firms to develop software that could use archived footage from standard cameras to detect violations using AI.

Fines can be paid through government e-portals or at local treasuries.
